Architecture education is an exercise in active citizenship to create a critical community capable of consciously intervening from private to collective space, from the scale of the body to that of the city.

In 2023, the third edition aims to offer an opportunity to reflect on education through architecture as an active exercise of a civic consciousness renewed by the overwhelming events of recent years. It is also a platform for exchange to investigate whether and how these changes have generated a different approach to reality. The isolation we have been forced into has put our bodies – the first vehicle of perception and confrontation with space – to the test, thus modifying our relationship with domestic environments and the urban scale.

In 2019 MAXXI Education organised the first international conference dedicated to education on the built environment to reflect on state of art in architecture education. The best practices survey highlighted the importance of activating processes to raise awareness of architectural language to increase awareness of the spaces of our everyday life and actively intervene in defining their aesthetic and relational characters.

In the second edition, design methodologies capable of “de-structuring” pre-defined linguistic codes have been explored to arrive at the formulation of different ‘alphabets of the space’, which better satisfy the new needs of a constantly-changing world – especially in the pandemic period.

The conference is aimed at students of architecture and architects, teachers of any kind and level, heritage educators, and cultural and educational professionals.

Archipicchia! Architettura per Bambini

Archipicchia! Architettura per Bambini is a non-profit cultural association founded in 2014 and composed of female architects. It carries out architecture workshops within schools and museum institutions in Naples. It transfers principles of active pedagogy into participatory design with children for urban planning interventions and the reactivation of public spaces in the city. Winner of numerous competitions, the association takes part in international conferences and publications to bring its experience abroad and in scientific and university contexts.

Maya Bird-Murphy

Is a designer, educator, and founder of Mobile Makers, an award-winning nonprofit organization that will serve as the Chicago Architecture Biennial’s official 2023 Education Partner. Mobile Makers seeks to make the design field accessible by including more perspectives in architectural discourse. Bird-Murphy was recently awarded the Pierre Keller Prize by Hublot, was selected by Theaster Gates and Prada as an Experimental Design Lab awardee, and was profiled in Dwell.

Katrin Koov

Is an architect whose focus is on the relationship between architecture and society, including spatial education. Katrin works in the architecture office b210. Previously worked as a partner in Kavakava and designed public buildings and public spaces. In the years 2016–2020 she was the president of the Estonian Association of Architects. Katrin teaches at the Estonian Academy of Arts and the School of Architecture, she has written articles, curated and designed exhibitions and edited the Estonian architecture magazine MAJA.

Fanny Millard

Artist and architect, she explores the concept of SPACE in relation to architecture, graphics and books. In 2014, she created EXTRA, an operational tool for the dissemination and implementation of her research. In 2017, BASIC SPACE was rewarded by the International Union of Architects with the “Golden Cube Award”, and on this occasion the BASIC SPACE workshops were adopted by the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism. In 2018, the new UPSIDE DOWN project was exhibited in a solo exhibition at Little Villette in Paris, and in Bologna at the Salaborsa Library. UPSIDE DOWN workshops were held in the same year at the Venice Architecture Biennale and the Cité de l’architecture in Paris. In 2021, MA, which explores the construction of the newborn’s space, was awarded the Métiers d’Art Bourse of the Cré’Atlantique fund. In the same year, Fanny co-authored UTOPOP with Marion Bataille, with which she received a special mention from the jury of the “livre jeunesse” award of the Académie d’Architecture 2022.

Catherine Ritman-Smith

Is Head of Learning and Engagement at Young V&A, a new museum of creativity and design for children and young people, opening in London in 2023. Catherine has led learning in other major cultural organisations including Somerset House, the Design Museum, and architecture charity Open City. In each role she has pioneered new creative collaborations and learning for schools, families and young people. She also founded the award-winning schools project Design Ventura.
