Music and video alternate in a performance between the past and present, between the recordings and reproductions of the popular collective memory.
In a highly technical age like ours, recording and reproduction make songs part of the collective memory; in their lyrics common places that summarise socially recognised feelings are rooted and, at the same time, impoverish their content. The very impoverishment of popular lyrics are at the centre of Inčiūraitė’s performance.
The Fragment as a Proverb is a musical performance accompanied by a video projection, presented by the Lithuanian artist Kristina Inčiūraitė, with the participation of Elements by Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia’s Cantoria and Mariko Takagi, Japanese teacher of the art of whistling.
Bio
Kristina Inčiūraitė, lives and works in Vilnius, Lithuania. Her work analyses the problems related to the transformation of identities and asks questions about the mechanism of hegemonic power in society. The artist is known for numerous collaborations with professionals from different sectors, in particular with young creative artists from the Academies. Inčiūraitė has taken part in more than 100 international and national exhibitions and events. Her work was presented at institutions such as the National Art Museum of China, Beijing, the National Art Museum of Ukraine, Kiev, the Oi Futuro Cultural Centre in Rio de Janeiro, the Kalmar konstmuseum in Sweden, the Łaźnia Centre for Contemporary Art in Gdansk, the ar/ge kunst Galerie Museum in Bolzano, the Kumu Art Museum in Tallinn, the Muzeum Sztuki in Lodz, the Műcsarnok in Budapest, the NGBK in Berlin, the Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art contemporain in Luxembourg, the Pori Art Museum in Finland, the National Gallery of Art and the Contemporary Art Centre in Vilnius, and many others.
Mariko Takagi, lives and works in the prefecture of Fukushima, Japan. She is an award-winning internationally recognised teacher in the art of whistling. She won (in the adult-women section) various international whistle competitions, at the International Whistler Convention in Louisburg, North Carolina, USA in 2013 and at Kanagawa, Japan in 2014. Takagi has taken part in numerous national public events. She holds more than one hundred performances in Japan each year.
