A meeting with the great architect, winner of the Pritzker Prize 2013
Toyo Ito is one of the most well known and most highly thought of Japanese architects: born in Seoul in 1941 when Korea was still under Japanese dominion, he then moved with his family to Nagano in Japan. In 1965 he graduated in architecture from the University of Tokyo and subsequently worked with the architect Kiyonori Kikutake, before setting up his own architectural practice: Urban Robot (today Toyo Ito & Associates, Architects). He has worked as an associate professor at Colombia University, Tokyo University, Tohoku University and Tama Art University and has received prestigious prizes such as the Good Design Award in 2001, the Leone d’oro at the Venice Architecture Biennale, the annual prize of the Architectural Institute of Japan (twice) and the Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects. In 2013 he also won the Pritzker Architecture Prize, an equivalent of a Nobel Prize in the architectural world.
Toyo Ito’s designs are highly respected in Japan and internationally thanks to their conceptual and innovative nature and the painstaking attention paid to the relationship between structure and environment. Among the projects presented and exhibited in The Japanese House. Architecture & Life after 1945, there is also a full size model of his White U House.
